A Lightning Safety Mandate For The Game Of Golf

Lightning is arbitrary,
random and unpredictable. Some five percent of annual USA lightning deaths and injuries happen on golf courses. Everyone associated
with the game should participate in lightning safety. The United States Golf Association (USGA) makes available warning posters and
stickers to inform players about lightning safety tips.
Golfers know that the USGA Rules of Golf (Rule 6-8) allow players to discontinue
play if they believe there is a danger from lightning. No other sport has any regulations relating to lightning.
A good rule for everyone is: "If you can see it (lightning), flee it; if you can hear it (thunder), clear it." Another safety tool
is measuring lightning’s distance using the Flash-To-Bang Method (F-B). For every five seconds from seeing lightning to hearing the
associated thunder, lightning is one mile away. Thus, a F-B of ten = 2 miles, fifteen = 3 miles, twenty = 4 miles, thirty = 6 miles,
etc.
We recommend suspending activities when lightning is 6 miles away, or a F-B of thirty. "Where is a safe place? How quickly can
we get there?" golfers should ask themselves. Go to large permanent buildings or get into a fully enclosed metal vehicle (car, van
or pickup truck). Avoid trees since they "attract" lightning. Avoid small on-course shelters: they are intended only for sun and rain
safety. Don’t wait around for the next strike, please.

What’s my beef? My beef is that golf season is pretty much over here in the Midwest, we got our first layer of snow last night. 2007
was not a good year for me in regards to my golf game. Due to personal commitments, I didn’t get out much, consequently, this was
reflected on my play on the golf course. I had two ’god awful rounds’ on back to back Saturdays. They were the kind of rounds that
for me, leave me in a foul mood, and make me question why I paid so much for 5 hours of torture. I need to work on my driver, there’s
no consistency when I hit it, mostly, I am hitting it right, an ugly ’hackers slice’. I think the problem is something simple, for
example, the way I setup, I may be swinging too hard and getting out of sync. And why am I compelled to pull out the driver when I
can hit my ‘persimmoned wood’ Hogan 4 Wood (that’s 35 yrs old) 250 yards down the middle on a fairly consistent basis, I think
I need a good caddy ( ha ha). My putting too, is very unsettled and inconsistent. I have three putters, a Ping Answer, a Compromise
‘Voodoo’, and a ‘Odyssey 2-Ball Putter’ clone I bought at Walmart. All have had their moments of shine and demise, but I need
to stick with one, and get settled. I need to get back to fundamentals. I need to practice what I preach.
